What Is an NMN IV Drip?
Summary
This is a treatment in which an ingredient called NMN is administered by intravenous drip or injection.
Taking NMN into the body is thought to support physical and cognitive function and offer anti-aging benefits. Its research findings drew wide attention after being featured in "Lifespan: Why We Age – and Why We Don't Have To," a book by Dr. David A. Sinclair, a professor at Harvard Medical School.

What Is NMN?
NMN is an abbreviation for Nicotinamide Mononucleotide.
NMN has a structure similar to vitamin B3 and is a substance that naturally occurs in the body, playing a role in repairing various organs and tissues. Foods such as edamame, broccoli, and avocado contain trace amounts of NMN. However, obtaining meaningful amounts of NMN from food alone is impractical. For example, taking in 100 mg of NMN would require eating roughly 56 heads of broccoli or 126 avocados.
Within the body, NMN is converted into a substance called NAD. NAD circulates throughout the body and activates the sirtuin genes (longevity genes).
When the sirtuin genes are activated, the body's cells become more active, which may bring about a range of anti-aging benefits such as clearer, healthier-looking skin.

NAD is a coenzyme essential for producing energy within cells, and it helps activate the sirtuin genes (longevity genes) believed to play an important role in regulating aging. An age-related decline in NAD is thought to be one of the causes of aging.
For this reason, it is said that continually replenishing NAD may support anti-aging.

Effect
NMN offers a wide variety of effects, which can be summed up in a single phrase as anti-aging benefits.
That said, anti-aging benefits are not something you feel right away the next day. Effects that may be felt more immediately include the following.
[Immediate effects]
- Relief from insomnia
- Reduced fatigue
- Relief from muscle soreness
[Medium- to long-term effects (anti-aging)]
- Improved skin radiance and firmness
- Enhanced metabolism
- Improved stamina and muscle strength
- Better cognitive function
- More balanced hormones
- A more balanced autonomic nervous system

Effects on the skin
Acting through the sirtuin genes, NMN influences a wide range of tissues and cells. It also acts on skin cells, helping to boost collagen and other components, which may improve skin radiance and firmness.
Benefits for stamina and muscle strength
NMN may help boost metabolism and strengthen muscle function.
In a study, healthy older men who took 250 mg of NMN per day for 12 weeks were able to do so safely on an ongoing basis, and their blood levels of NAD+ and NAD+-related metabolites increased significantly. The results indicated that NMN improved muscle strength and performance. This suggests that continued oral intake of NMN may be a very useful approach to preventing age-related declines in muscle strength, such as sarcopenia.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) improves motor function in older men (Department of Diabetes and Metabolism, The University of Tokyo Hospital) (reported May 2022)
Benefits for weight management
Studies have reported that NMN may also help support the enzymes involved in energy production within cells. For this reason, NMN is expected to help improve lipid metabolism and burn stored fat more efficiently, and it may be useful as part of a weight-management approach.

Risks and Side Effects
No risks or side effects specific to NMN IV drips have been reported.
However, the risks and side effects that can occur with IV drip treatments in general, as described below, may apply.
- In rare cases, an anaphylactic reaction (an acute allergic reaction) may occur
- Pain at the puncture site, bruising, and nerve irritation
- Other symptoms such as headache or nausea
Safety Information
At present, no serious side effects have been reported.
The following information is available.
A research group led by Professor Yutaka Ito, together with a team at the University of Washington in the United States, was the first in the world to show that NMN can be safely administered to healthy humans.
In Japan, a group at Keio University Hospital conducted the following clinical trial and concluded that NMN can be safely administered to humans.
Ten healthy men aged 40 to 60 took 100–500 mg of NMN three times in total, at an average interval of two months. There were no changes in blood pressure or pulse, and tests of liver and kidney function showed no abnormalities.
"World's First: Anti-Aging Candidate NMN Shown to Be Safely Administrable to Humans" (Keio University School of Medicine)
Safety in a human clinical trial of intravenous administration of 300 mg of NMN was confirmed at Hyogo Medical University.
Intravenous administration of NMN did not affect electrocardiogram, pulse rate, or blood pressure, nor did it affect metabolic markers in the liver, heart, pancreas, or kidneys. These results indicate that intravenous administration of NMN is safe and beneficial in humans.

Recommended Number & Frequency of Treatments
For anti-aging purposes, it is recommended to continue treatment at intervals of about 2 to 4 weeks.
When do the effects appear?
Effects may be expected from a single session, but since anti-aging involves multiple factors such as skin, muscle, and stamina, how quickly effects are felt inevitably varies from person to person.
Short-term effects include relief from insomnia, reduced fatigue, and a clearer head, which can often be felt on the same day or the following day.
