What is Juvelook?

Juvelook product image

Juvelook is an injectable that combines non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid with Poly-DL-lactic acid (PDLLA), and is classified as a type of skin booster.

After injection, it is slowly absorbed by the body over 1–2 years, and during this time it stimulates fibroblasts and naturally increases collagen and elastin, for long-lasting results.

Because it uses lactic acid, a substance also naturally present in the body, it carries a low risk of allergic reactions and offers a high level of safety.

The English spelling is “JUVELOOK”.
It combines JUVE (youth, vitality, energy) with LOOK (appearance, expression).

It is also a highly safe product that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA), the counterparts of Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Korea Consumer Awards

Juvelook has won awards for two consecutive years (2022, 2023) in the skin booster category of a Korean consumer survey.

At the Korea Consumer Award 2023, a total of 41 brands were selected, including Starbucks, Terra, and Juvelook.

Juvelook is drawing attention as the next-generation skin booster following Rejuran. In Korea, it has already been used by over 400,000 people. (As of December 2023)

Types of Juvelook

It isn’t widely known, but there are actually two types of Juvelook. They are as follows:

  • Juvelook
  • Juvelook Volume = Lenisna

➊ Juvelook is the better-known version, so when people say “Juvelook,” they generally mean this one.

❷ Juvelook Volume is often referred to as “Lenisna” in Japan. In Korea, however, it is more commonly called “Juvelook Volume”.

Differences between Juvelook and Juvelook Volume (Lenisna)

Differences between Juvelook and Lenisna
So what is the difference between the two?
Dr. Ishii

It comes down to concentration and particle size, which affect how much volume each one creates. As its name suggests, Juvelook Volume (Lenisna) excels at building volume, making it particularly well suited to deep wrinkles such as nasolabial folds.

Four Key Features of Juvelook

1. Long-lasting results

Poly-DL-lactic acid (PDLLA) continuously stimulates fibroblasts in the skin, which promotes collagen production. After injection, it slowly breaks down into water and carbon dioxide within the skin over 1–2 years. As a result, unlike conventional hyaluronic acid products, Juvelook nurtures the skin over an extended period.

Below is the official Juvelook YouTube video explaining how Juvelook works. (Note: the video is in English.)

2. Few side effects

Juvelook uses a substance called “Poly-DL-lactic acid (PDLLA)”. Other poly-lactic acid products in the same category as Juvelook include Sculptra and Macoom.

Sculptra had particles with a pointed shape, which could strongly stimulate the surrounding cells and carried a risk of forming subcutaneous nodules.

Macoom is an introductory product for Potenza. While it significantly reduced the risk of subcutaneous nodules that were common with Sculptra, it is not approved by the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) for direct injection into the skin.

Unlike Sculptra or Macoom, Juvelook is designed with rounded particles, so the risk of forming subcutaneous nodules is minimal. Moreover, it has received approval from both the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) and the U.S. FDA.

3. Customizable treatment with targeted injections

Juvelook can be used not only for full-area injection but also for targeted injections. This allows us to address not just the whole face but also specific concerns. For example, we can target the following areas:

  • Acne scars and depressed scars
  • Under-eye fine lines and sagging
  • Pores on the nose

4. Extensive medical data

Numerous medical papers

Juvelook is widely used in Korea, and there are numerous research papers on its effectiveness and safety.

Seyeon Oh, et al. Poly-D,L-Lactic Acid Filler Increases Extracellular Matrix by Modulating Macrophages and Adipose-Derived Stem Cells in Aged Animal Skin. Antioxidants 2023, 12(6), 1204.

Recommended for those who:

  • Are not satisfied with the results of laser treatments
  • Are concerned about acne scars and uneven skin texture
  • Are bothered by fine lines under the eyes
  • Want to improve skin firmness and elasticity
  • Want to reduce enlarged pores
  • Want to improve overall skin quality
  • Are concerned about neck wrinkles

Effects

The dual action of Poly-DL-lactic acid (PDLLA) and non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid improves skin quality from within, helping the skin regain firmness and radiance.

  • Improved skin quality
  • Enhanced firmness and radiance
  • Reduction of fine lines
  • Minimized pores
  • Improved scarring
  • Improved acne scars (pigmentation and craters)

Because PDLLA continues to produce collagen for 1–2 years, long-term results can be expected.

How it works (Mechanism of action)

When PDLLA is injected into the deep dermis, it gradually breaks down into water and CO2 over roughly 1–2 years. During this time, it stimulates dermal fibroblasts, activating the production of collagen and elastin.

Similarly, non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid also activates the production of collagen and elastin by stimulating fibroblasts within the dermis.

Treatment areas

There are two main treatment areas:

1. Full face

Full-face injections cover a wide area including the entire face, forehead, and cheeks. This treatment can help improve pores and overall skin quality.

2. Targeted areas

We can target specific areas such as frown lines, fine lines around the eyes, and acne scars. This is recommended for those with particular areas of concern.

Treatment methods

There are mainly three methods for injecting Juvelook:

  • Doctor’s manual injection
  • Rejuvenating injection (machine-assisted)
  • Potenza

1. Doctor’s manual injection

The doctor administers the injection while assessing your skin condition, adjusting the depth and dosage appropriately for each area. This method uses a syringe.

2. Rejuvenating injection (machine-assisted)

While “rejuvenating injection” is sometimes used to refer to the product itself, it more commonly describes the “machine” used for the treatment.

The product is loaded into the rejuvenating injection machine, and the injection depth and dosage per injection are set on the device. This allows for consistent depth and dosage throughout the treatment. For rejuvenating injections, a nurse typically performs the procedure.

3. Potenza

Potenza is a type of treatment device known as microneedle RF. It is sometimes described as an advanced version of the Dermapen.

After inserting ultra-fine needles, RF (radiofrequency) energy is emitted from the needle tips. This creates tiny channels in the skin, into which the product (Juvelook) is delivered using what is called a “drug delivery system”.

Who cannot receive this treatment

・Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding

・Those with abnormal immune function or a history thereof, and those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy

・Those prone to keloid formation, hypertrophic scars, or pigmentation disorders

・Those with a bleeding tendency, or those taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or anticoagulants such as warfarin

・Those with excessive sunburn, eczema, dermatitis, severe inflammatory acne, or scabs at the Juvelook injection site

Risks and side effects

At the needle insertion sites:

・Redness, swelling, pain, edema

・Bruising

・Temporary bumps

Downtime

Redness and swelling may occur at the injection sites, but in most cases these subside within about 24 hours.

Given the nature of the treatment, subcutaneous bruising may occur at the needle insertion sites, though this is not always the case. If bruising does occur, it will gradually fade over 10–14 days.

How to choose your injection volume (cc), explained
  • At our clinic, we also offer a “3cc” option to make it easier to compare with what other clinics offer.
  • However, for full-face treatments, 3cc may not provide sufficient “density.” For those seeking maximum results, we recommend considering the following guidelines:
  • 【Pattern 1】If you’re fine with lighter coverage for the forehead and the area below the nose → 3cc
  • 【Pattern 2】If you want thorough coverage above the nose but are fine with slightly lighter coverage below the nose → 4cc
  • 【Pattern 3】If you want thorough coverage across the entire face, including the area below the nose → 6cc
  • If you’re unsure, our doctor will assess your needs on the day of treatment and recommend the optimal volume (and rest assured, we never engage in unnecessary upselling).

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I see results?
Dr. Ishii

Most people begin to notice results after 2–3 weeks.

You can see results from a single treatment, but the changes become more noticeable after completing a 3-session set.

For optimal results, we recommend the following approach:
・Complete a 3-session set at 1-month intervals, followed by maintenance treatments every 6 months to 1 year

※Because Juvelook continuously stimulates collagen production, the results last for an extended period.

Is it safe?
Dr. Ishii

Juvelook has been approved by both the U.S. FDA and Korea’s KFDA, indicating a high level of safety.

How does it differ from hyaluronic acid treatments?
Dr. Ishii

Hyaluronic acid treatments involve injecting cross-linked hyaluronic acid, which is firmer, physically adding volume to improve wrinkles and other concerns. Juvelook, by contrast, works by boosting your body’s own collagen production, resulting in a natural increase in volume.
