"What exactly is Kiarareju, and what does it do?"

"What about pain and downtime?"

"How is Kiarareju different from Rejuran?"

Do you have questions or concerns like these about Kiarareju?

Hello. I am a physician at Smart Skin Clinic, an aesthetic dermatology clinic.

You may not have heard of Kiarareju before, but you are likely familiar with Rejuran.

It may be easiest to think of Kiarareju as"a generic version of Rejuran."Rejuran is an injectable formulation whose main ingredient is polynucleotide (PDRN), a component extracted from salmon, and Kiarareju is likewise an injectable formulation based on this same polynucleotide (PDRN).

This article explains, in clear terms, what Kiarareju is, along with its mechanism, effects, and risks.

What is Kiarareju Water Light Injection?

Kiarareju Water Light Injection is a skin-conditioning treatment that helps refine the skin from within by injecting a formulation called "Kiarareju" using a device known as the "Water Light Injection."

What is Kiarareju?

Kiarareju is a formulation whose main ingredient is salmon-derived polydeoxynucleotide (PDRN). In addition to PDRN, it contains hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, and because it is designed to boost the skin's own natural capabilities, it is also referred to as a skin booster. Since it uses salmon-derived polydeoxynucleotide, it is sometimes described as a "salmon injection."

Hearing the phrase "salmon-derived polydeoxynucleotide," some people may think of Rejuran, which is well known for its cell-regenerating effects. You may also feel some hesitation about the fact that it is more affordable than Rejuran.

Rejuran

Rejuran is a preparation whose active ingredient is polydeoxynucleotide (PDRN), extracted from salmon DNA, and it works to enhance the skin's self-regenerating ability.

Polydeoxynucleotide (PDRN) offers a variety of effects, including increased production of growth factors, improved capillary circulation, anti-inflammatory action, and DNA resynthesis.

Kiarareju holds a position much like a generic version of Rejuran, being one of several more affordable formulations developed following Rejuran after its patent expired. Because these later formulations involve lower research and development costs, they are offered at more affordable prices than Rejuran.

For more details on Rejuran and Rejuran Water Light Injection, please see here.

What Is Water Light Injection?

The Water Light Injection is a device that injects the formulation like a stamp, using nine ultra-fine needles per shot.
Suction pressure allows the ultra-fine needles to enter the skin, delivering the formulation evenly at a preset depth.

Thanks to the effect of the formulation and the skin's natural response to heal the tiny needle marks, this may help support collagen production and skin regeneration.

Effects of Kiarareju

The effects of Kiarareju areessentially the same as those of Rejuran..

  • Improvement of skin quality
  • Hydration
  • Improved skin tone
  • Improved skin elasticity
  • Improvement of fine lines and crepey wrinkles
  • Strengthening of the skin's barrier function

Ingredients of Kiarareju

  • Polydeoxynucleotide: skin regeneration
  • Hyaluronic acid: high hydration, long-lasting
  • Niacinamide: brightening

Kiarareju containsingredients similar to those in Rejuran..

Hyaluronic acid is a component found in human skin and cartilage that offers a high level of water retention. It naturally decreases with age. Because it is absorbed by the body, it is considered to have a relatively high safety profile.

Niacinamide is an ingredient recognized by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for its "brightening," "wrinkle-improving," and "rough-skin-improving" effects.

The following study reports improvements in wrinkles and skin texture when polydeoxynucleotide was injected on its own into the nasolabial folds.

The selected right-side nasolabial fold received 4 ml of PN-HPT® (≈polydeoxynucleotide) intradermally during the initial priming phase (the "NLF Rx group"), while the selected left-side nasolabial fold received 4 ml of saline (placebo) (the "NLF Lx group"). Three and six weeks later, all patients received 2 ml of subcutaneous cross-linked HA in both NLF areas (4 ml in total).

(omitted) The Antera 3D® device showed that, in the NLF Rx, wrinkles and skin texture improved significantly compared with baseline at 6 weeks (monotherapy phase) and at 3 and 6 months (PN-HPT® priming + HA phase). HA levels as measured by the quantitative Vectra H2® assessment technique in the right NLF were significantly higher than the contralateral side at both 3 and 6 months.

PN-HPT® monotherapy was confirmed to be a potentially valuable and effective option for rapidly improving the dermal texture and quality of the skin in patients with moderate to severe NLF. Acting as a priming agent within the skin, PN-HPT® prolongs the clinical efficacy of cross-linked HA.

Which layer is it injected into?

Cross-sectional view showing skin layer structure and location of injection into shallow dermis

Injectable formulations vary in both their ingredients and intended purposes.
Therefore, it is extremely important to administer each formulation at the appropriate “depth” and “volume” to ensure optimal results.

In the case of Kiarareju, the main injection layer is the "superficial dermis."

The skin has a layered structure—from the surface: the epidermis, the dermis (superficial, middle, and deep layers), the subcutaneous fat layer, and the muscle layer—each playing a different role. The superficial dermis lies just beneath the epidermis and is the layer responsible for the skin's "visible texture," such as smoothness, firmness, and moisture.

The superficial dermis is the layer where the ingredients and intended purpose of Kiarareju can be most effectively drawn out, and this is the medical rationale behind injecting this formulation into that layer at our clinic.

The Difference Between the Chiara Reju Hydra Injection and Other Skin-Nourishing Injections

It’s easier to choose a skin-nourishing injection by considering “what ingredients it contains and what aspects of your skin you want to improve.” Chiara Reju is a generic version of Rejuran (a generic product containing the same main ingredient, polynucleotide (PDRN)) and is a treatment designed to provide hydration and strengthen the skin’s foundation. For those whose primary goal is “collagen stimulation,” Jubelook is also an option.

Kiarareju treatment areas

  • Face (forehead, temples, nose, cheeks, fine lines and crepey wrinkles)
  • Neck
  • Décolleté
  • Back of the hand

Kiarareju can be used over a wide range of areas, from the entire face to the neck and décolleté.

Pain during Kiarareju Water Light Injection

  • No more than a slight prickling sensation as the needle enters the skin

*Individual variation applies; anesthesia is available

Kiarareju Water Light Injection reduces pain by applying suction as the needle enters the skin.

Because the needles are ultra-fine and nine can be delivered at once, the number of insertions is kept to a minimum.

Pain can also be reduced by cooling the treatment area beforehand and by using anesthesia. Smart Skin Clinic's pricing includes the cost of anesthesia.

Onset, longevity, and recommended maintenance frequency of Kiarareju's effects

[When the effects appear]

  • Hydration and brightening effects = immediately after treatment
  • Skin-regenerating effects = approx. 2 to 4 weeks later

[Recommended number of treatments]

  • About 3 to 4 sessions, spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart (= 1 course)

[Duration of effect]

  • More than 1 year
*When a full course of treatment is completed

[Recommended maintenance frequency]

  • 1 course every 6 months to 1 year

At first, the hyaluronic acid provides hydration and a brightening effect, and after 2 to 4 weeks the skin-regenerating effect of the polydeoxynucleotide begins to appear.

As with Rejuran, a single session can produce results, but the effects become easier to appreciate with repeated treatments.

Recommended injection volume for Kiarareju

[Pattern 1] Lighter treatment is fine for the forehead and the area below the nose ⇒ 3cc

[Pattern 2] The area below the nose can be a little lighter, but I want thorough treatment above the nose ⇒ 4cc

[Pattern 3] I want thorough treatment across the whole face, including below the nose ⇒ 6cc

For more details, please also refer to this illustration.

If you are unsure which volume best suits your concerns, please feel free to discuss it during your counseling session.

Downtime and risks of Kiarareju Water Light Injection

The concern most people have about Kiarareju Water Light Injection is how it may affect daily life afterward.

Downtime of Kiarareju Water Light Injection

[Period]

  • About 2 to 3 days

[Symptoms]

  • Redness and small raised bumps at the needle sites: resolve within 24 hours
  • Stinging sensation: several days
  • Bruising: gradually fades over 10 to 14 days

Pain and swelling can be relieved by cooling. Wrap an ice pack or similar in a clean cloth and apply it intermittently to the treated area.

For details on the downtime of Water Light Injections, please also see here.

How to care for your skin after Kiarareju Water Light Injection

After treatment, please keep the following points in mind.

  • Skincare: possible immediately after the treatment
  • Shower: possible on the same day
  • Makeup: possible after about 24 hours

Kiarareju Water Light Injection has no major impact on daily life. If you work at a desk, you can carry on as usual. Any bruising can be covered with concealer.

However, beneath the surface, the skin is working to repair micro-injuries that are not visible to the eye. Please avoid activities that increase circulation and may hinder recovery, such as long baths, strenuous exercise, and massage, as these can intensify downtime symptoms.

Risks of Kiarareju Water Light Injection

Beyond downtime symptoms, Kiarareju × Water Light Injection treatment may involve the following side effects.

  • Pigmentation
  • Infection
  • Allergy

After treatment, avoid touching the treated area more than necessary, as this may lead to pigmentation or infection. In addition, skin that is still regenerating can be prone not only to pigmentation but to various skin concerns, so be diligent with moisturizing and sun protection.

Swelling, pain, and redness resemble downtime symptoms but usually subside over time. Worsening symptoms are an important sign of an allergic reaction. Please consult the clinic as soon as you notice them.

Please note that, like Rejuran, Kiarareju is derived from salmon, so it cannot be used by those with a fish allergy.

The procedure takes about 30 to 40 minutes excluding counseling, and about 60 minutes including anesthesia.

How to avoid a disappointing outcome with Kiarareju Water Light Injection

  • Choose a trustworthy clinic based on its case results and reviews.
  • Make sure the pricing is something you can sustain over time.
  • During counseling, share your concerns and goals with the doctor, confirm suitability, treatment details, and downtime, and proceed only once you feel fully informed and comfortable.
  • Follow the aftercare instructions.
  • Receive treatment at the recommended frequency and maintenance intervals.

Even for the same treatment, the level of skill and the fee structure vary from clinic to clinic.

Be sure to also confirm how the clinic thinks about the expected results and downtime. In Japan in particular, many people prefer treatments that minimize the impact on daily life, whereas at overseas clinics downtime is sometimes of less concern than it is for Japanese patients. The needle depth and suction pressure can be adjusted, so take the time to discuss your preferences carefully.
